I've been trying to check the availability of a handful of domains in the .re and .be TLDs, and quite frequently the web page tells me "Syntax Error" instead of "unavailable"--looks like maybe a database query problem? These pop up as items on the list of domains that were unavailable, but I'm not sure; in some cases a whois shows no record of any such domain. For example "he.re" returns: "No entries found in the AFNIC Database." Any idea what's going on there? Thanks! (I'll ask again in French if that's better, but my French is pretty regrettable...)

That's actually correct - just try doing a whois on the command line. Also, see the rules for .re registrations at https://www.gandi.net/domain/re/info, in particular:
Syntax: from 3 (excl 2 letters) to 63 alphanumeric characters or a hyphen (excluding in the first and last place
So he.re is not allowed - it's too short. Shame, really :) So to anwer your question - looks like an interface bug, it should really say 'not allowed' rather than 'syntax error'. Thanks, Ward.
